Aborlan is subdivided into nineteen (19) barangays. Seven of its 19 barangays are along the coasts of Sulu Sea including two urban barangays (Poblacion and Magsaysay).

Due to its more protected location and easier access, fishing activities are more intense on Sulu Sea side compared to the one in the West Philippine Sea.
